India unveils World’s cheapest laptop at $35

Today, India’s Human Resource Development minister, Kapil Sibal has announced the cheapest touch screen computing device in just $35 that makes it the World’s cheapest tablet. This device comes with a smaller memory and no hard disk and it is designed specifically for students.

It sports a web browser, PDF reader, office software, media player, multimedia input/output capabilities, video conferencing facilities, multiple content viewer and remote device management capability.

This laptop is based on the Linux system and can run on the solar power besides the usual battery operated systems. The ministry expects the prices to drop to Rs 1,000 ($ 20) and even it can drop to Rs 500 ($ 10). The final price will depend on the transportation cost.

According to India’s HRD minister Kapil SIbal,

We have reached a (developmental) stage that today; the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything.

This device has a 5/7/9 inch touchscreen display and also comes with a single unit system with a built in keyboard,  2GB RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB port and powered by a 2-watt system to suit poor power supply areas.

This tablet device would be made available to students in 2011. I think it gone be the best option foe the students looking foe the cheapest laptops for study purpose.
