If you have the iPhone 4 and you update its firmware to iOS 4.1, than it will also update the baseband from 1.59.00 to 02.10.04 which is not supported by the Ultrasn0w and you may lose carrier unlock.
But you are able to protect your baseband from update and can preserve the 1.59.00 baseband, using the TinyUmbrella tool. Than it allows you to carrier unlock your iPhone 4 using Ultrasn0w.
First follow this step by step guide to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on iOS 4.1 firmware using the Limera1n tool.
After Limera1n jailbreak, you can preserve the unlock baseband 1.59.00 with TinyUmbrella.
Update iPhone 4 to iOS 4.1 While Preserving Baseband 1.59.00
1. Download TinyUmbrella 4.1.6 (Download Link) and the iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 Firmware (Download Link)
2. Launch the TinyUmbrella 4.1.6 and If you get a Windows Security Alert or Firewall alert, Allow Access.
3. Make sure your iPhone 4 is connected, so that TinyUmbrella can detect the type of device and its firmware.
4. Hit Start TSS Server. Once The TSS Server is running successfully, umbrella will kill iTunes.
5. Open iTunes and Hit Shift+ Restore button. Browse and select the iOS 4.1 Firmware File.
6. iTunes should give you error 1004. This is what we were looking for. Notably, the baseband has not updated.
7. Click the Kick Device Out of Recovery.
Your iPhone will now be on 4.1 with the 1.59.00 baseband. Now follow this guide to unlock it with Ultrasn0w.
Unlock your iPhone 4 with Ultrasn0w
Ultrasn0w 1.1-1 can unlock iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G on basebands 01.59.00, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, and 05.13.04.
1. Launch Cydia on your iPhone 4 and Tap on the Manage tab.
2. Touch Sources, Tap Edit and then Add Source at the top left of your iPhone screen.
3. Enter http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com in the Enter Cydia/APT URL dialog and tap Add Source.
4. Let Cydia follow a series of automated steps to update it’s sources.
5. When done, search for Ultrasn0w 1.1-1 in Cydia and install the package.
That’s it. After installation, reboot your phone and you should be able to use it with any carrier SIM.
