i3DG – 3D Content on iPhone & iPod touch without Glasses

The new i3DG is an analog accessory for the iPhone and iPod Touch that enable users to watch 3D contact on their smartphone without the need for special glasses. This cool i3DG device invented by Jitsuro Mase, a media artist, and produced by DIRECTIONS, Inc, a Japanese media production company.

With i3DG iPhone accessory, you can enjoy 3D movies directly in your hand without 3D glasses as required in My3D goggles by Hasbro.

The  3DG is a small box-shaped peripheral that can be easily plugged to an iPhone or iPod Touch. The device helps to create an illusionary reflection of content from the iPhone display to a screen that is placed at a 45 degree angle to render content in a three dimensional format.

i3DG word is derived from the words “I”, “3D” and “Gadget”. It supports a wide range of different applications, from simple 3D videos and animations to accelerometer based games.

i3DG is a playful analog extension to an iPhone or an iPod Touch, converting its 2D display into a layered 3D view. Using the old technique of placing a half-silvered mirror at a 45-degree angle in front of an image, in a new context, the project extends upon 3D displays and iPhones. As a peripheral gadget, i3DG can support a wide range of different applications, from 3D videos and animations to accelerometer-based games.

i3DG works on a technique called Pepper’s ghost, which is apparently an illusionary effect created using plate glass and special lighting techniques that can make images appear to morph into one another thereby rendering 3D effects.

This device has already been making waves at electronics shows across the globe. The device recently found a mention at the Ars Electronica Festival 2010 that was held in September this year and will be demonstrated once again during the International Film Festival at Rotterdam next year.

The accessory is not in mass production yet and so you cannot order one for yourself at the moment.
