How to Fix iTunes Error 1013 While Updating iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1

Many users are facing Code 1013 on their iPhone 4 while updating to iOS 4.2.1 firmware. These errors occurs in the middle of the iOS restoring process, the iPhone 4 was put into recovery mode and iTunes reported that the update could not be finished due to “Error 1013″.

To fix the 1013 error, you’ll need to modify the hosts file and comment out a sentence. Here are the procedures for Mac and Windows.

Fix Error 1013 while updating iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 firmware

For Mac OS X Users:-

1. On your Mac, go to your “Applications” folder.

2. Now navigate to the “Utilities” folder.

3. Launch “Terminal”.

4. Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” (without quotes) and hit return.

5. Enter your password

6. Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering “#” in front of the text.

7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O.

8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X.

9. Restore your iPhone 4.

For Windows users:

1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories
2. Run Notepad or WordPad.
3. Click “Open.” from File menu.
4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
5. In “files of type” select all documents
6. Open “hosts” file
7. Delete all line that has “gs.apple.com”.
8. Restart your computer and
9. Restore your iPhone again using iTunes.

This time, you should be able to upgrade your iPhone properly.
