Currently, Nokia is the largest handset manufacturer of the world and there are approximately 1.2 billion Nokia handsets in use throughout the world. The Guys at Nokia has just published the Part 1 & Part 2 of the “10 things you didn’t know about Nokia” post.

1. The name Nokia comes from the river ‘Nokianvirta’ which flows through the town ‘Nokia’ in the region of Pirkanmaa.

2. Before focusing on telecommunications products, Nokia produced tyres, rubber boots and televisions, amongst others products.

3. The Nokia theme tune was originally composed by Francisco Tarrega, an influential Spanish composer and guitarist of the Romantic period.

4. The ‘special’ tone on Nokia phones when receiving SMS messages is actually Morse code for ‘SMS’.

5. The world’s first GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by then Prime Minister of Finland, Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.

6. A pulse analyser, designed in 1962, was the first electronic device produced by Nokia.

7. Nokia’s first handheld mobile phone was the Mobira Talkman, launched in 1984. Its price was approximately €4,560 (in today’s money).

8. Nokia’s first touch screen phone was the Nokia 7710, launched in 2004.

9. In May 2007, Nokia’s 1100 handset was the best-selling mobile phone of all time and the world’s top-selling consumer electronics product.

10. The Nokia N70, N90 and N91 were released simultaneously and were the first Nseries devices ever launched.

1. The original Nokia logo (a merger between Finnish Rubber Works and the Nokia Wood Mill) was incorporated into Nokia in 1871.

2. ‘Connecting People’ became Nokia’s slogan in 1992.

3. Nokia employs 128,000 people in over 120 countries worldwide.

4. Approximately 1.2 billion Nokia handsets are in use throughout the world (one for every 5.7 people).

5. This makes Nokia the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones.

6. Also, did you know that Nokia is the world’s largest producer of digital cameras.

7. Need for Speed: Shift HD is the most downloaded game from the Ovi store while Angry Birds is the most downloaded paid for app.

8. There are now over 4 million daily downloads from the Ovi Store.

9. Nokia handsets do not automatically start the call time when the call is connected, but only when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets)

10. Nokia phones are sold in approximately  77% of all the countries in the world.
