Fix 404 Permalinks Errors after WordPress Upgrade 3.1

February 27, 2011

Recently, WordPress has rolled out the new updated WordPress 3.1 version  with many new features such as admin bar, inter post linking, custom post formats etc. But after upgrading to WordPress 3.1, many users & bloggers has experienced 404 errors on permalinks.

Due to this error, whenever you click the post title, it gives you 404 page. Same things happen when you click on the Previous entries or Next entries links. This 404 errors decrease the traffic to you site.

I also had the permalinks issues. After going through some Some WordPress help forums and Google search, found out some permalink and caches related plugins are responsible for this cause.

Some plugins haven’t been updated in years, so they are not compatible with new WordPress 3.1. If you are using the Top Level Categories plugin, disable and remove it, and install the FV Top Level Categories plugin which does the same exact thing and created specially for the WordPress 3.1 update. Some others plugins break the permalinks

  • Simple Tags
  • Multipage Toolkit
  • Advance Permalinks Plugin

After that, re-install the WordPress 3.1 again, it may fix the permalinks errors. If you still experienced the same problems follow these simple steps.

  • Disable and reactive all plugin related to permalinks structure.
  • Clear caches if you have installed any caching plugin.
  • Check the htaccess file and regenerate it.
  • Change permalinks to Default and Save, and change back to your Custom Structure.

I hope it will fix all your problems with WordPress 3.1 upgrade. If you have any other solution for this issue, let me know in the comment areas.
