Apple iPhone 4, App Store & five iOS Games Awarded Guinness World Records

Both Apple’s iPhone 4 and App Store have been awarded Guinness World Records. Moreover, some of App Store games were also awarded titles by Guinness World Records – Angry Birds, Plants Vs. Zombie, Tap Tap Revenge, Frotz and Enigma.

iPhone 4 received the award as the fastest selling portable gaming system. The first-day sales of iPhone 4 was 1.5 million units, making it the fastest selling game system in history. By comparison the PSP only sold 200,000 units its first day and the Nintendo DS sold 600,000 units in its first week.

App Store received three awards – “the most popular application marketplace” with over 6.5 billion downloads since its launch in July 2008, the “largest downloadable video game store” record with 37,362 games, and when the App Store launched on July 10, 2008, it featured over 500 apps, including 145 games, making it “the largest launch line-up of any gaming system“.

Rovio’s Angry Birds has been awarded a Guinness Record as the “top paid-for App Store game in most countries,” topping the charts with 6.5 million copies sold in a total of 67 countries.

Guinness says PopCap’s Plants vs. Zombies was the “fastest-selling iPhone/iPod strategy game”, pulling in 300,000 paid downloads in nine days of being on sale.

Disney-owned Tapulous’ Tap Tap Revenge series got the “most popular iPhone game series” record, at 15 million downloads across all the Tap Tap games.

Frotz game was awarded as the “first text adventure engine for iPhone“, and Enigmo game was awarded as the “first physics-based puzzle game on iPhone”.

All these awards have been published in the Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition, which the company is promoting alongside a Guinness trivia app for iOS and Android devices.
