Dialer Shield is a new handy Cydia tweak that helps to avoid accidentally tapping or pressing buttons during phone call on your iPhone. It is similar to CallLock tweak which also locks iPhone screen while you are on call.

Using Dialer Shield, you can easily prevent/block the cheek-presses during a call which sometimes accidentally end the call. The tweak puts the stop to random pass presses by restraint them while you are taking on iPhone.

You can still access the all buttons, number keys and can also end the call via an intuitive two-way slider. Simply slide in left direction to use the number keys and slide it other way to end the call.

No new icons will be added to your SpringBoard and no settings need to be configured with Dialer Shield tweak.

A new free Cydia tweak released called iAndroid, which transforms your iPhone or iPod Touch into Android device. It bring Android simulation experience to your iOS devices.

The iAndroid app is created by fr0st, developers of OSFaker tweak which simulate both Android and Windows Phone 7 operating system on your jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch.

Finally, Twitter has Announced its own Photo Sharing Service and a revamped version of Twitter Search. The service will lets you upload and attach photos to your Tweet directly from Twitter.com site, and also show you related photos-videos inside search results.

According to Executive Chairman Jack Dorsey:

Not only will it deliver more relevant Tweets when you search for something or click on a trending topic, but it will also show you related photos and videos, right there on the results page.

Twitter has partnered with Photobucket to attach photos directly to your Tweets rather than having to rely on third-party services like Twitpic and Yfrog. Twitter will roll out the new service in the next several weeks and soon you will also be able to use it from your Twitter mobile app. The company is working with mobile carriers to enable you tweet photos via SMS.

Twitter’s improved search promises to bring more relevance results for searches and trending topics, and it also include related photos and videos directly on the results page. Twitter has also partnered with Firefox to integrate hashtag and username searching directly into the browser’s address bar.

Acer has revealed its first Windows Phone Mango device at the Computex this week. It will be called Acer W4. Acer’s W4 device will have the Mango operating system and the first-gen Windows Phone 7 hardware.

Acer Windows Phone includes a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 5PM rear-facing camera, 8GB storage and DLNA support. Unfortunately, it won’t have the NFC support and a front-facing camera.

In the first quarter of 2010, Nokia and Intel merged their Maemo and Moblin software platforms to form a single Linux-based and fully open source platform, MeeGo, for a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Nokia has also been working with Intel to develop a new smartphone operating system platform, MeeGo.

It is an open sourced platform which is developed by Nokia keeping in mind long term generation device. During 2011, Nokia plans to come up with first smartphone with MeeGo as the platform. With the development and launching of this platform Nokia initially intended to lauch new series of smart phone sin later part of 2011 but due to several reasons this palns seems to have taken back seat. The major reasons put forward for this reaction is the lack of interest shown by markets and developers in this.

In 2011, Nokia announced it would drop its own cell phone operating system and will use Microsoft’s software. The alliance between Nokia and Microsoft is seen as an effort by the two companies to gain a foothold in the booming smartphone market. The company is still the global leader in wireless handset market share, but its performance in the US has been lackluster.

This is widely known now from the last employee communication and public address that was made by company CEO and jolting it down to need for some serious strategic changes that are needed for and the same was seen some days later when Nokia went for strategic tie up with Microsoft.

Looking ahead, lack of exciting applications will hold back Nokia’s proprietary software platforms, Symbian and MeeGo, as developers continue to focus efforts on competing platforms such as Android and iOS. Instead of fighting an operating systems (OS) war, Nokia should focus on developing services that will tie consumers to its handset brand regardless of OS.

Growth prospects remain very promising, with carriers aggressively subsidizing smartphone purchases in mature markets in an effort to increase their data service revenue, and with a large untapped growth opportunity in the emerging markets, particularly in China where smartphone adoption has yet to take off.

The landscape for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is becoming more active, as equipment vendors seek to use acquisitions as a way of entering attractive adjacent markets to better benefit from the economic recovery. In response to fundamental shifts in buying patterns, the communications equipment and computer networking industries have witnessed rapid consolidation.

Acquisitions can give a company necessary product breadth, but they also pose a new set of challenges. Nokia’s current smartphone platform utilizes Symbian Operating System. Nokia now believes that in longer term Symbian platform is not sufficiently competitive in leading markets. The deal is said to be very beneficial for Microsoft, with which it will get a direct entry into world’s largest phone maker. Nokia intends to leverage the Microsoft’s broader search engine and advertising platform. Microsoft’s business unit’s produces products like Microsoft Office and Microsoft exchange and there is a chance that the new partnership will focus on building a platform that is compelling to corporate users.

In September 2010, market research firm IDC noted that it expected a 6.9% increase in 2011 for worldwide mobile phone shipments and a 7.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the period from 2009 to 2014. In the US, IDC expected a 1.8% increase in 2011 and a 0.3% CAGR for 2009–14. The smartphone segment, however, provides a sharp contrast: IDC expected the worldwide converged device (smartphone) market to increase by 24.5% in 2011, with a five-year CAGR of 24.9%, with the US market increasing by 28.3% in 2011, and a five-year CAGR of 21.0%.

Given the attractive dynamics of the smartphone market, it’s no surprise that the number of devices and sector competition have increased substantially over the past year. In a market once dominated by Nokia Corp., companies such as Research In Motion (Blackberry) and Apple Inc. have been gaining ground.Nokia and Research In Motion both experienced large share losses in the third quarter of 2010, year over year, but Apple was relatively flat despite its significant growth.

The recent announcement by Nokia regarding the shift from Symbian to Windows 7 is expected to have a huge implication in the smart phone market. Until last year, Microsoft lost a considerable market share whereas other OS introduced new experiences and applications. The new alliance of Nokia and Microsoft is expected to deliver Nokia’s hardware excellence and Windows phone differentiated platform.

RIM, an enterprise player made its entry into consumer segment with BlackBerry Curve 8520 and BlackBerry Bold 9700. RIM is expected to account for 13.4% of smartphone market in 2011 as per IDC. In US iPhone has been eating into Blackberry’s market share but Android has managed to allure potential iPhone buyers. HTC is expected to compete with Moto, RIM and Apple devices. In 2010, Nokia grabbed the highest market share of 33% followed by Research In Motion with 16.1%; Apple with 15.7%; Samsung with 7.6%; and HTC in the fifth position with 7.1%.

Symbian, an open source operating system acquired by Nokia in 2008, is used in most of the smartphones like Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG. This OS offers advanced computing ability and connectivity than other contemporary featured phones. Some of the symbian components were licensed from third parties who restricted its use only to the companies which are members. Presently, Android has positioned itself as the new leader in the smartphone segment replacing the market leader Symbian OS after firmly securing the 2nd position in 2010.

Google’s Android emerged as the leading smartphone with 32.9 million shipment compared to 31 million shipment of Nokia’s Symbian in 2010. Android helped the global smartphone market to witness 101.2 million units shipment in 2010 with 89% growth compared to 2009 although Nokia with 28% market share remained in the position of the leading global market phone vendor. It would be interesting to see how the market pans out between the two after the various tie-ups taking place.

Unlike some other smartphone platform offerings, it works well with touch, has a good framework for applications, and has an enterprise capability and potential that currently is underdeveloped and under marketed. It will take some number of iterations for Microsoft to begin to challenge the leaders — Apple for its complete ecosystem, Android for its market penetration and ability to power many types of devices, and Nokia for its market coverage. This is where the real test of Microsoft’s strategies will come?

Windows Phone 7 faces an uphill battle when it comes to attracting developers for its Marketplace. The classic chicken-and-egg situation exists, where the developers want to see volume first. However, Microsoft needs a large quantity of apps to attract developers to the platform. As mentioned previously, Microsoft’s focus on Silverlight constrains the number of developers who might consider the platform, and limits the transferability of apps written in other languages on other smartphone OS.

Android’s open-source software and hardware partnering strategy provides a contrast to Apple’s. Google is banking that handset innovation and breadth of offerings will outweigh the complexity presented to developers (and even reflected in the Android app store), enabling Android to outpace all smartphone competitors.

Android’s open philosophy permits more OEMs to participate in the platform and faster innovation. Vendors such as HTC have been able to deliver hardware features such as larger screens, while others such as Samsung can deliver new technologies, such as organic light emitting diodes (AMOLEDs). Some OEMs deliver new software features, such as Motorola with Motoblur.

Android provides features that Apple has not yet offered, including full background processing, though the number of tasks is limited to five open tasks. Background processing, it should be noted, is a trade-off between battery life and flexibility in mobile situations (performing background tasks when plugged in is a nonissue) Android also makes extensive use of active widgets that, unlike the static icons of the iPhone, provide status updates from applications. Its active wallpaper is of interest to consumers, and its menu system can navigate horizontally and vertically, something Apple applications cannot do.
